What are certificates of origin?

Certificates of origin (also called Guarantees of Origin) are the official proof that a matching amount of electricity from renewable sources was generated and accounted for in the system. For Ostrom, this means the electricity from our renewable generators and the volume we purchase is backed by certificates that are bought and cancelled within the European Guarantees of Origin system, and audited regularly.

We are certified by TÜV Nord. The certification confirms, among other things, that the green electricity supplied is fully from renewable generation, that sources can be traced back to clearly identified origins, and that these criteria are checked annually.

Still, “green electricity” can mean different things depending on the supplier. If you want to go one step further, look for providers that also source electricity from domestic generation assets via power purchase agreements (PPAs) and consider recognised green power labels as an additional orientation.
