How do i find my local grid operator?

Written by Laura

Your grid operator is responsible for operating and maintaining the electricity network in your region. When it comes to power supply questions, meter installation, or outages, it's important to know who they are.

🔍 How to find your grid operator

1. Check your old electricity invoice

The easiest option: your grid operator's name is listed directly on your electricity bill.

2. Check your electricity meter

Your meter displays the name of the company it belongs to. Since grid operators usually also act as metering point operators, this is often where you'll find the right information.

3. Ask your landlord or property management

Don't have an invoice handy? Your landlord or property management company will usually know who the responsible grid operator is.

4. Use the distribution network operator directory

At vnbdigital.de you can find all grid operators in Germany. Enter your address and you'll immediately see who is responsible for your area.

📍 Examples by region

  • DĂźsseldorf: Netzgesellschaft DĂźsseldorf mbH

  • Konz (54329): Westnetz GmbH

  • Bavaria: Bayernwerk Netz GmbH or SWM

The responsible grid operator is always determined by the address of your supply point.

When should you contact your grid operator?

Power outage

In the event of a power outage, your grid operator is your first point of contact. They operate the network and are responsible for restoring supply. Most grid operators have a 24/7 fault hotline.

Meter replacement or removal

Your grid operator is responsible for replacing your electricity meter. Contact them directly if you have any issues. Having an official document as proof can help resolve the situation more quickly.

Registering controllable loads

Do you have a heat pump, wallbox, or battery storage? Controllable loads must be registered with your grid operator. They will review the registration and approve the commissioning.

Applying for reduced grid fees

For certain controllable loads — such as heat pumps or electric vehicles — you can apply to your grid operator for reduced grid fees. This can noticeably lower your monthly costs.

Applying for exemptions from certain levies

In some cases you can apply for an exemption or reduction of levies — for example for self-generated electricity or certain consumption systems. Your grid operator is the right contact for this.

Having new devices and systems checked

Whether it's a wallbox, battery storage, or solar system — before installation, your grid operator checks whether your connection meets the technical requirements and whether the system can be safely integrated into the network.

For technical questions about your home network or electrical circuit, we as your energy supplier are unfortunately unable to help. In that case, please contact your grid operator or a certified electrician in your area directly.

Grid connection or new connection

Are you planning a new build or renovation? Your grid operator is also responsible for everything related to the grid connection.
